Offer Description

Candidates with a background in photonics and/or quantum physics are invited to apply for Early Stage Researcher 8 (ESR) position in the LasIonDef project (Laser Fabrication and Ion Implantation of Defects as Quantum Emitters). This position is open at the non-for-profit organisation EYEST, which is related to B-PHOT Brussels Photonics group at Vrije Universiteit Brussels. This project is funded as an European Commission’s Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Network - European Training Networks (MSCA-ITN-ETN). Highly competitive and attractive salary is offered, plus mobility and family allowances as applicable.

LasIonDef will train 13 ESRs in the highly interdisciplinary field of quantum technologies, providing training within the facilities of our research centers and industrial partners. In addition, LasIonDef will further strengthen Europe’s world leading position in research and development of quantum technologies.
The ESR8 will undertake research on Educational kits to disseminate quantum photonic technologies to the general public. As part of an Innovative Training Network you will work with a cohort of 12 ESRs across Italy, Germany, France, Poland and UK in both academia and industry regularly attending project meetings, training activities and carrying out extended secondments at two of these institutions. All ESRs will be trained in photonics and quantum technologies, public speaking about outreach, strengthening their future career options.

Objectives: Development of education material for dissemination of quantum technologies and quantum photonics to the wider public with a focus on young people.
Expected Results: ESR8 hosted by EYEST will develop educational material to be used in schools and in science museums about quantum photonics. For this purpose, ESR8 will closely collaborate with the other ESRs (ESR1 at IFN and ESR6 at UULM) in the project to collect ideas, to give trainings to the ESRs and to use this material for outreach and to collect feedback on the developed education material.
Although ESR8 will only participate for 12 months, the researcher is vital to the success of the project, disseminating ideas and results of LasIonDef to a wider public through new educational kits and quantum-optics demonstrations. ESR8 will ensure the continuation of the impact of LasIonDef by distribution of education material.

Planned secondment(s): Two secondments of 1-month duration at UULM (M26) and IFN (M30) to collect information for quantum photonics demonstrations.

You will join a young, vibrant and growing research group working on applied photonics and quantum optics.
EYESTvzw is a Belgium based non-profit organization established by members of the Brussels Photonics Team of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and dedicated to 'Excite Youth for Engineering, Science and Technology'. The mission of EYEST is to raise the interest of young people towards science, engineering and technology by creating and disseminating educational programmes and by supporting teachers in their endeavor to convey the fascination of science and engineering to pupils and students, and as such to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
VUB B-PHOT, which is a leading center of expertise in optics and photonics in domains such as photonic lab-on-chips, optical spectroscopy, free-form optics, optical fiber sensors, non-linear optics and semiconductor micro-lasers. With over 25 years of experience B-PHOT is internationally recognized for its fundamental and applied research. A multidisciplinary team of 50 highly skilled researchers and engineers push the boundaries of light technology for industrial innovation applied in health care, food safety, loT, telecom, green energy, aerospace, mobility and Industry 4.0.

This position is full time (37.8 hours a week), available immediately with a fixed term of 12 months. Please NOTE: EYEST reserves the right to close this vacancy early should sufficient applications be received.

Salary: The salary consists of the basis gross salary €3270/month (~net 2100) plus the monthly net €600/month living allowance and Research/Training costs). Depending on the researcher’s family situation at the recruitment date, there is also a family allowance (€ 500/month).
